I’ve naturally been drawn to powerful design. It drives my emotions and my sense of being. It permits me to be who I am, from this place, I feel free enough to can explore, colours and patterns.
My ethos concerning everyday living battles with modern society and yet through my sense of personal creation, I can create spaces in my home that empower me, filling the space with objects that make me happy to be in this space.
After Covid, I took a course to get back into being sociable. This weaving course included making one’s yarn for weaving. To do this, we utilised heat press paints on paper, transferred them to fabric which we cut into strips, tied together using this as yarn to weave with.
I fell in love with the freedom that the painting and printing brought. In mailing these abstract expressionism paintings I paid attention to the flow of the ink on the paper and not how the colours would transfer through the heat press process. I gave way to the magical colour queen and in return, I received vibrant mesmerising colours. Yes, I was in love with this way of creating. It’s this love that has brought me here today.
I have an appreciation of artists such as Frank Bowling and Aubrey Williams, and textile artists such as Althea McNish, Robert Earl Paige, Joel Robinson and Lois Mailou Jones, that allows me to situate myself amongst other artists who express themselves through colour and textiles.
The designs themselves are paintings and mono printings that are made into patterns by following simple pattern repeats. I made a conscious design choice not to use flowers but to naturally use the patterns that were formed in the process to see what develops.
Sharing these around the kitchen table with friends and family, I was guided to share my design and love for kitchen linens. This is how Marogmi came to be.
The name is derived using a combination of letters from my full name, in this way I encapsulate all of my heritages and personality. Does it have meaning beyond this, yes it does, it gathers a philosophical way of being and doing that stems from such Japanese philosophies as Wabi Sabi and Shibui.
